In 1957, the Lockheed Super Star, the Lockheed L-1649A Super Star, or Super Connie, as it is colloquially known, joined the Lufthansa fleet and for the first time received the Senator class as the most exclusive travel option.
The focus of its service was the non-stop service to New York across the North Atlantic. The aircraft represented a technical masterpiece. With its four piston engines, it closed the chapter of classic propeller aircraft. The flights, which lasted up to 17 hours, departed from Hamburg. The Super Star is 35.42 meters long, has a wingspan of 45.18 meters, and is 7.12 meters high.
Frankfurt, August 8, 2025 – Now, Lufthansa’s former flagship is shining in its former glory. The icon of the skies former days now has its classic 1950s appearance again. In recent weeks, the aircraft received a completely new paint at Münster/Osnabrück Airport. A particular challenge was the painting of the legendary parabolas, one of the central elements of Lufthansa’s design at that time. The paint job was carried out using historical documents from the company archives and the precise paint planning of the Graphics Solutions department at Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg.
Next week, the Super Star will be transported by heavy-duty transport to Frankfurt Airport. Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Lufthansa, it will be the main attraction of the Lufthansa Group’s new conference and visitor center from spring 2026, along with the legendary Junkers Ju 52 D-AQUI.
